Road trip to Boston, MA (5.30 - 6.1.2009)

My friend (Kevin) and I drove from Cincinnati last Saturday (5.30) to Boston to check out the first show of the current Phish summer tour. We were making great time (we left Cincy at 1:30 pm) until we hit the toll at the George Washington Bridge just outside of New York City. That was a cool two hour traffic jam. The toll had a total of (I think) seven or eight booths. They were only operating two. We arrived in Boston at around 4 a.m. and had to wait until 6 a.m. to catch the first commuter train to downtown where we were staying with some Cincy friends who recently relocated to Boston. While we were waiting for the commuter rail we found a nice golf course (Franklin Park) next to a zoo (Franklin Park Zoo), where we proceeded to park and wait until the commuter station opened. So, the sun rises at around 4:30 on the east coast during this time of the year. This I did not know. Anyway, die-hard and crazy bastard golfers were teeing off at this time. 4:30 in the morning on a Sunday, people! I got out of the car and talked to one of the dudes about to walk up to the first tee. He told me that Franklin Park Golf Course is one of the first courses to open in America. You can check out the information about the course here (http://www.sterlinggolf.com/franklin/index2.htm). At first I was confused because the club house parking lot was gated closed and guys were just walking up to the first tee and playing. I asked the guy if it was a free course or something and he told me, "No, the guys pay after they make the turn." The guy probably thought I was some hick-bumpkin from Ohio. I felt like an ass. We drove to the commuter station around 6 a.m. and caught the train. Kevin and I arrived at the apartment we were crashing at around 7 a.m. and finally got some shut eye at around 8 a.m. I think I was awake a total of 24 hrs. Bit fatigued at that point. We woke up around 1 p.m. and headed out to check out some of the city. We then briefly came back to the apartment before heading out to get some drinks before the show. Arriving at Fenway Park for a Phish show was a bit surreal. I had never before been to Fenway Park, let alone Boston. It was nice that we had about an hour before set time to walk around the grounds and check things out. As far as the show went: a bit wet and cold at times. Song highlights for me included Moma Dance, Stash, Limb By Limb, David Bowie, Curtis Loew, and You Enjoy Myself. Overall I think the show was solid. However, I do have to admit that during the concert I had any uneasy feeling of whether or not they (i.e. Trey) were going to get through some of the songs without screwing them up. It was an excited-nervous feeling. Bit strange since I have never felt that before at a show. It probably has something to do with me reading too much of what other people think about everything Phish on the internet. We arrived back at the apartment around 11:30. Crashed. Woke up at 7 a.m. Monday morning and I arrived back in Cincinnati at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The drive back only took about 13 hours, but I had to drop Kevin off up in Dayton and I messed around for a bit before driving back home to Cincinnati. Overall it was an exhaustingly fun trip. Something I can tell my kids about one day, "There was a time when I would drive, round-trip, 28 hours to see a four hour Phish show." I'm not crazy. People who have experienced a live Phish show know what I am talking about.

Time Turns Elastic

Good song. Second set killer.

Shoot, shoot, shoot fantastic into romantic (say what?)

The Go! Team and their music video for the song "Ladyflash" from the band's 2005 release Thunder, Lightning, Strike. Epic. Kinda makes you want to color or something.

Welcome!

So, this is my first post to a format that I never before now envisioned using. I must admit I have been somewhat skeptical about stuff like blogs. But, here we are. I would like to think that I will be able to keep up with the blogging and--hopefully--keep you kids out there informed with everything music related that I find interesting as well as my life goings on in general. We'll see how it goes. So, stay tuned for some exciting stuff concerning music and life (i.e. "musique et vie")!
